Twelve months

Here it is finally: the picture and the text to Mylène’s twelfth month. As I am writing this text, I am on the way to Fuzhou. It will not surprise you that the past few days have been pretty hectic. Now, there is some time again to spend on writing. Sadly though, I will not be able to write much about our little girl for the next seven weeks, because she will only come to Fuzhou with Shiqi by the end of November. I myself will be looking forward to some words by Shiqi, who is now left with the responsibility to report about Mylène’s daily adventures.

But this article about the past month, I can still write.

So what happened? How did Mylène develop during the twelfth month?

Talking:
Saying “dag” is definitely back in her repertoire again! She uses it very often throughout the day. “Mama” is another word she uses often, however, it is still not always used in the right context. Recently we heard her even say “papa” when she was looking at a picture of me … how proud I was!!! Besides the “ka ka ka” for duck Mylène now also knows what a dog says: “oof oof oof”. But the word she used the most during the day is “duh duh”, while pointing her finger to some object.
Speaking of which, Mylène has become very insistent in pointing out things she wants to have. If she does not get what she wants, she starts shouting, and the things that are offered to her instead, are thrown on the floor immediately. Here, we have to be careful not to spoil her.
Not only does Mylène speak more, it now becomes very clear that she can understand what we are saying better and better. Shiqi and I both use the word “Nee” if she is doing something she is not allowed to do. And to our positive surprise, she obeys quite well. Furthermore, when I say “op” after she finished her food, Mylène starts clapping her hands. She also claps her hands, when Shiqi says “pai pai shou” or when I say “klap maar in je handjes”. It’s so nice to notice that we can communicate with her more and more.
A very nice new development is the affection Mylène shows. Often, she crawls up to us and then wants us to hold and hug her. While doing that, her small arms embrace our necks very strongly. Since a week or so, she even stretches and opens her arms to us, to show that she wants to be hugged. So cute!!
Moving:
Mylène is crawling like a world champion. This almost happened from one day to the other. She is very quick, so we have to keep a close eye at her. Standing up herself while holding on to something is no big deal for her anymore. She even walks while holding on to something. And if we take her by two hands, she starts stepping .. step … step …step
Mylène is still very active; she seldom sits still for longer than a few seconds. Sometimes it is a big challenge to celan her diapers. What she does sits still for sometimes, is reading a book with us. She especially likes sitting on oma’s lap to read a book with her. She then even brings the book herself and points out that she wants to be entertained.
Eating:
This has become a struggle again. It costs us a lot of trouble to get her to eat her food. Every day we have to come up with new tricks to distract her and to keep her entertained, if we don’t want the food to be flying through the room. We basically kept the same menu as before, just the bottle with fruit mouse is off the menu. Instead, we feed her pieces of bread and chunks of fruit now, to let her get used to chewing food.
Her favourite meal of the day is the warm lunch: a “Hipp” bottle, usually with rice, vegetables, and bio-meat.
Mylène now also wants to eat and drink herself often. Of course, when she is handling a spoon to feed herself, most of the food ends up on the floor still. Drinking herself, however, goes very well. We can leave Mylène alone when she is lying on her back in the box, drinking her milk … very convenient!
Health:
For the first time in a year, Mylène was ill. She had the so called “three days fever”. This is a very common thing for small children in Germany. Another boy who stays at Mylène’s nanny as well, got the same thing; probably Mylène was infected by him. What happens, is that the child suddenly gets very high fever (over 40C .... Mylène reached 40,3C) which lasts for fairly exactly three days, and then disappears again, as suddenly as it came. After the fever disappears the child usually gets red spots all over the body.
And this was indeed what happened to Mylène as well. Interestingly, Mylène was in a relatively good mood, considering the fever she had.
Now, all is fine again. But of course, we were sooo worried! She was so hot at one point, that we even put wet cloths around her legs ... in the middle of the night.
Weight & Length:
